Kancho Royama Hatsuo Punching Sandbag

Here's a very nice video of Kancho Royama Hatsuo of Kyokushin Kai punching the sandbag makiwara, called "suna-bukuro" in Japanese. It literally means a sandbag.

It's interesting how he punches off backstance (kokutsu dachi). Instead of pivoting the backfoot forward, he compresses the pelvis forward, really throwing the lower body into the punch. I remember seeing such technique practiced on sandbag makiwara on some of the Kendokai websites. It's clear that Kancho Royama has retained many of the things he learned from Nakamura Sensei.

Thank you to all visitors!

Hello,

I'm sorry that I haven't posted in a while. It's not easy to find information on Nakamura sensei, even though Kendokai karate material is becoming more widely available. It seems that the school is not as exclusive as it once was. Videos of younger practitioners training in Kendokai are not uncommon, and the training method does not look too different from most traditional karate.

I've noticed that I've been getting a lot of viewers from France and Russia, more than the U.S. I even saw a mention of my blog on a Russian martial art discussion forum. I'm very happy to provide what little information that is available on Nakamura sensei and his karate. With the benefit of technology, so many martial artists are able to communicate freely and this is a wonderful thing.

Thank you everyone!

Essence of Karate

Here's a short video on Kendokai Karate School. I'm still studying Japanese but I was able to make out some of the messages on the video:

"Essence of karate is in the fist. Study the way of the fist."
"When the heart dwells the fist, the result is the iron fist. When the fist dwells the heart, the result is the sincerity (or determination. The exact meaning is unclear to me)."

Kendokai Karate Official Website

Sorry about not posting for such a long time. Any material on Kendokai and Nakamura sensei tends to be rare, so please understand.

Here's an updated Kendokai Karate official website. It looks quite dynamic, unlike the earlier version. It has a full screen video for the background, and a few video clips of dojo practice. I do hope that more material will be posted on this website in the future.
